Anglophobia is the opposition, dislike, fear, hatred, oppression, persecution, and discrimination of English people. We seem to be in the middle of an epidemic at the moment – it has happened before and will happen again. Many people despise the successful.
It is no new phenomenon but as old as England - success breeds envy and jealousy. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and George Orwell highlighted anti-English sentiment among the very first Anglophobes – aka, the Welsh, Irish, and Scottish.
"Welsh, Irish and Scottish nationalism have points of difference but are alike in their anti-English orientation." - George Orwell
Irish nationalism is an anti-English movement at heart. Even before the Great Famine, anti-English hostility was deep-seated. Post-famine, it was adopted as philosophy and the foundation of the Irish nationalist movement. The Celtic Revival movement took on an ever-increasing anti-colonial and anti-English sentiment, such as the anti-World War I song ‘Who is Ireland's Enemy?’
This hatred remains today. For example, in 2018, the Irish author and journalist Megan Nolan wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times that detailed how she had come to hate England and English people.
It is no better in the other Celtic parts of the UK. I was assaulted in Wales for being English and was told to remove a Union Jack badge from my coat in Scotland or face assault. Not a St. George flag badge, but a unifying flag that includes us all on this island. Anti-English racism exists. But why?
Little Country Syndrome is real and can be seen across the world in many countries. It is so common in the UK that the English have become accustomed to it as everyday life while visiting our neighbouring Celtic lands.
In 1999, a race relations officer with Lothian and Borders Police said a correlation had been noticed between the establishment of the Scottish Parliament and anti-English incidents.
In 2000, the Chairman of Swansea Bay Race Equality Council said "Devolution has brought a definite increase in anti-English behaviour". In 2001, Dafydd Elis-Thomas, a former leader of Plaid Cymru, said that there was an anti-English strand to Welsh nationalism.
In 2017, former Scottish journalist of the year Kevin McKenna penned an article in The National labelling English people living in Scotland as 'colonising wankers'.
On 21 April 2023, it was reported that Plaid Cymru councillor, Terry Davies was suspended for a rant of discriminatory xenophobia. He referred to two colleagues as "outsiders" after telling them that "Wales is for Welsh people."
Can The Union survive this onslaught? Is it time for England to leave the UK and go it alone? A few years ago, I would have said absolutely NO for we are a family of nations and should stick together. But today, I am leaning towards independence for England.
Why should we be part of a club where many members hate us and do not want to be part of a club where we are members? Nearly half of Scots voted to leave the UK in the 2012 Independence Referendum. Almost a quarter of the Welsh want to go it alone. In Northern Ireland, those who wish to join a different country are about a third.
“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” - Groucho Marx
It is no better outside the UK, anti-English sentiment exists there also. This is a little more understandable for foreigners should distrust other foreigners, especially as we have fought many wars with many countries.
The French dislike us for owning large parts of France for centuries and saving them from the Germans in two world wars. One of our French wars lasted well over a hundred years. Argentina has an issue with our rightful ownership of the Falklands islands. Russia has been our enemy for hundreds of years, except when we joined forces to beat the Germans. The Cold War never ended and we are continually suspected of meddling in their affairs – which is probably correct.
Even our so-called close friends tend to dislike us. The Australian, New Zealand and South African slang word for the English is Pommy or Pom - an acronym for 'Prisoner of his/her Majesty’. This can be classed as a little fun. Insulting friends is an English pastime - but some can take it too far. Newspapers in Australia have referred to the English as ‘Filthy Poms’ and had to apologise. I class this type of behaviour as insolence – similar to the disdain an upset child feels towards its parents.
A large part of the Woke mind virus is anti-English, and through association, anti-American - the sins of the father will be passed to the son. This is why the English are not encouraged to wave our flag, celebrate our heroes, or discuss our history in a positive manner. But we are encouraged to wave nonsensical flags, celebrate foreign cultures, and accept the blame for everything wrong in the past.
When Thomas Sowell, an American academic, was asked what Jews could do to be hated less, he offered one piece of advice - “fail”. He explained that if the Jewish people would prove to be failures in whatever they attempted to achieve, then the anti-Semites would perhaps lessen the pressure against them.
Weak Englishmen have known this to be true for a long time for they have been promoting a failed England as a viable solution. It has been government policy for most of my life and this agenda is now coming to fruition - the policy of failure.
In the very near future, the English will no longer be hated for we will be a failed nation that only deserves pity. We will be able to hold our heads high and look other nations in the eyes as we proudly announce: We are just like you now. A failure!
I want the opposite of this nightmare. I want to be hated by foreigners and weak Englishmen for it means we are doing something right as a country – it is a badge of honour.
Anglophobia may not be pleasant, but it is the price we pay for being English and that price is a bargain. I would have it no other way.
